Your little girl almost certainly is sound asleep during these night-time awakenings, and the good news is that her behavior, though it is strange, is completely normal. In fact, it\u2019s so normal among kids her age that I think you need to get a second opinion, preferably from a doctor who is <\/span><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sleepcenters.org\/index.aspx\" rel=\"noopener\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" target=\"_blank\">a specialist in sleep disorders medicine<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, on whether she should be taking any medication. <\/p>\n<p>Your daughter most likely is experiencing what are known as confusional arousals during sleep. Confusional arousals occur during deep, non-dreaming sleep, when the brain gets stuck, as it were, between sleeping and waking. The arousal is what causes the \u201cawake-like\u201d behavior\u2014sitting up, perhaps talking incoherantly and acting disturbed or disoriented\u2014but as you have noticed, she is atually doing this while most of her brain is sound asleep. This is what explains the confused speech and disorientation (she is not fully awake) and it explains her absence of memory for the experience. She never truly was awake. <\/p>\n<p>Because your daughter merely sits up in bed, and does not run around or otherwise pose a threat to herself<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"> (please see <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dreamdoctor.com\/children-s-sleep\/night-terrors.html?phpMyAdmin=29c2328cc73b8ed64ba7f78bbbec0416\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">night terrors<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: #000000;\">), most physicians would decline to \u201ctreat\u201d this symptom. As you<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"> read more about this common behavior during children\u2019s sleep, you will also be comforted<\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><\/span><\/span> <span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to learn that there is nothing \u201cwrong\u201d with your daughter. In fact, she is due to outgrow these confusional arousals, naturally, in the next year or so.
